| FISHING TIPS FROM THE PROS |
…..SO YOU WANT TO LEARN TO FISH
As a young child, my dad took me fishing almost every weekend, and I loved it ever since I drowned my first worm. One nice thing about fishing, you can be a beinner at any age. Male or female, young or old, fishing is for everyone at any age. Fishing hasn’t changed - it’s still “man, gear, and baits, used correctly, in pursuit of the fish”. Man or woman, boy or girl in pursuit of fish, must present the right bait or lure at the right time and depth to catch the fish - - any fish.
To be successful at the skill of fishing, at the beginner’s level, I would like to offer some tips and techniques to get you started.
| TIP #1 |
Go fishing with an experienced, patient, fisher-person. |
| TIP #2 |
Be prepared to catch anything; bream, crappie, catfish, bass, etc.. Just catch fish and learn to enjoy. Your teacher might use live bait or artificial lures. Just catch fish to keep your interest level high. |
| TIP #3 |
Start with a short rod (5-1/2’) for ease of casting and control. Select a reel you can use with ease; closed faced or open faced. Try both. Use light line, preferably 8-12 lb. Test line for easier casting. Learn to tie the different knots by practicing over and over. |
| TIP #4 |
Know your equipment and how to use it. Practice casting for accuracy. Know when to “set the hook” on some fish or just offer slight resistance while reeling on fish with softer mouths. |
| TIP #5 |
Know your fish & their habits. What type of bait do they feed on. Try various techniques and offer a variety of lures until it all comes together for you and you have a fish at the other end of the line. |
| TIP #6 |
After teaching youth to fish and enjoy the fun and art of fishing, you might seek some of the fishing programs offered by local or national clubs and organizations. BASS offers Casting Kids Program that is presented at their final tournament weigh-ins. BASS also offers youth memberships to their organization. Lots of good information on fishing is offered in the magazine. Take kids to some of the local tournament weigh-ins on a lake near you. |
All in All, fishing is fun for the whole family. Get involved in the sport of fishing with the family. Enjoy a day on the water and have fun fishing.
